AGAINST THE GRAIN—[16 NOV 2016]  [transcript pending]

[snip]  (c. 28:00)

[Bank failures in New York…Argentina defaulted on its bonds…because O’Neill didn’t do anything about it.]

[This may not end neoliberalism, but it may make it work much less smoothly.  ‘We’ll see people who are not good at firefighting…to undermine the ability of its Treasury to roll over its debt.  But they always backed out on the Debt Ceiling brinksmanship.]

[Of course, Obama hasn’t been very sharp at dealing with these economic issues, either.  Obama has been lousy and, especially, in dealing with Europe.  Quantitative Easing has been about insuring New York Banks’ position…  The U.S. has managed to keep the GFC from turning into the Great Depression again.]  (c. 31:00)

[(c. 41:00)  Sasha Lilley asks about integrating the working class into ‘having a stake in the system continuing on some level’ and the working class’ role in relation to Trump’s presidency.]

[(c. 45:00)  On the erosion of pension fund systems and how workers get tied into the capitalist system.]

[‘We’ll see the rise of gangster capitalism.’]

[(c. 47:00)  ‘Thank god it wasn’t Bernie.  Had he beaten Hillary and then lost to Trump, the radical left would’ve been set back for decades because the ‘soft left’, the liberals, would’ve insisted that Trump won because of the left ‘spoiler’ vote removing the ‘moderate’ candidate.]

[54:00)  Can we stop defending and start presenting a utopian vision?]

[(c56:00)  We need to develop people’s democratic capacities…]

472px-Leo_PanitchLUMPENPROLETARIAT—Dr. Leo Panitch is a bloke we’ve heard a number of times on free speech radio, particularly on Doug Henwood‘s weekly radio show, Behind the News.  Here, he speaks with another notable thinker on the Left, Chris Hedges.  They discuss Panitch’s book, The Making of Global Capitalism: The Political Economy of American Empire (2012), in which Panitch quotes Harold Innis:

“American imperialism has been made plausible and attractive, in part, by the insistence that it is not imperialistic.”
