In American schools, it seems we teach kids almost nothing about civics. American high school students are lucky, if they get a semester of government in their senior year, usually in combination with a semester of basic neoclassical economics. But these days some high school students can opt out of government and/or economics. So, it’s no wonder few people, beyond lobbyists and right-wing think tanks, pay any attention to the Supreme Court. [1]

Background noise… homie’s podcast Alicia Silverstone interview by ‘Justin’: ‘you don’t want magnesium stearate coating on your supplements’ “She dodged the Bay Area question,” lamented one of the homies. Of course, San Mateo High School had one of the best drama departments on the Peninsula. And San Mateo certainly had one of the biggest theaters in the area, at the time. From what I recall, one of my homies back then went out with a girl from Burlingame High School, who attended dance classes with Alicia Silverstone. Later, we all went to see Crush in San Bruno, a movie I’d never heard of starring people I’d never heard of, but which we went to see anyway because the star of the movie is a former classmate of my homie’s girlfriend. I thought the movie was pretty cheesy. But it was impressive to think someone from my high school had made it to Hollywood level movie star status. Another former classmate, Jonah Blechman, starred in most school plays at Borel Middle School, then San Mateo High School, and then went on to play in at least one movie with Leonardo Dicaprio and Robert De Niro. At any rate, Alicia Silverstone could have given some props to her San Mateo High School roots. Hell, Kris Kristofferson went to San Mateo High. But she disappointed the homies, who wanted her to help put San Mateo on the map. I’m not surprised. Alicia Silverstone’s cool; but she always seemed kind of bourgeois. She’s a self-described “activist”, perhaps we are all dilettantes. We try to speak out against injustice, whilst avoiding foolishness. As long as we can avoid bullshitting ourselves and one another, we have a chance at attaining understanding. San Mateo must not be glamorous enough to mention. At any rate, Ms. Silverstone mentioned that she now lives in San Francisco. So, she stayed in the Bay, but she upgraded her mythology from suburbia to The City. She could afford to do so. Even MC Hammer had to leave his Bay Area mansion and move to a smaller mansion in the Central Valley. In the early 2000s, post-gentrification and whatnot, droves of working class families got priced out of living in San Mateo, the Peninsula, and got pushed eastward as economic refugees to the East Bay, or northeast to Pittsburg and Antioch (where cops have increasingly been killing black and brown people with impunity since then) or further out to the Central Valley. Yet, the jobs stayed in the Bay. So, the fortunate few with jobs must commute hours each day for the privilege to avoid redundancy or unemployment. And, unless one fits the profile for a management position, one can expect minimal working class wages with constantly rising cost of living and lagging or non-existent cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), or wage increases. Nowadays, an army of California workers from the Central Valley begins their commute between 4 and 6 am to get to their jobs in the Bay Area. Isn’t life a trip? The reality is that there have not been enough jobs for years. And, post-plandemic, the job shortage is worse and the pay and working conditions are worse than ever. There are scavengers digging through dumpsters and houseless people everywhere. But contemporary liberal, conservative, or establishment economists claim the economy is improving two years after the March 2020 controlled demolition of the American economy. All you have to do is look outside and look at the poverty in each city and town. But establishment economists only count active unemployment claims, not people who have been dropped from unemployment claims, but are still unemployed or underemployed. Such economists undercount the involuntary unemployment rate.

[1] For Americans, who still care about civics and the three branches of government, including the Judiciary and the Supreme Court, public media and independent journalism is the best bet for fairness and accuracy in reporting and clear, honest, informative analysis. Pacifica Radio used to among the best of free speech radio. Nowadays, it sounds more like milquetoast liberal (i.e., pro-capitalist or non-anti-capitalist) NPR or PBS contenta, but with lower production quality. The national Pacifica Radio coverage of Day 2 of the Judge Jackson SCOTUS Confirmation Hearings was inconsistent. Even on Pacifica Radio, it seems, we can’t get people to pay attention to the Supreme Court. The so-called flagship station, KPFA, which hosted the daylong broadcast will delete the audio archives after a few days. Why would they do this? Obfuscation is the most salient reason, Orwellian erasure of historical memory.
