Doug_Benson_by_Gage_SkidmoreLUMPENPROLETARIAT—It’s always good times hanging out with Doug Benson.

Cobb's NYE 31 DEC 2015, IMG_20151231_174431 Doug Benson performed, and recorded, an episode of his podcast, Doug Loves Movies at Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve.  Benson brought out a panel of comics, including Greg Proops, Chad Daniels, Geoff Tate, and Jacob Sirof, to join him for some convivial discussion, banter, and games involving film.  RDM and I were able to get front row seats by greasing the wheels of social relations ever so slightly.  RDM & I had our name badges, which RDM had cleverly crafted for us both.  But we weren’t selected by any of the comics on stage.

It’s always nice, and quaint, visiting that part of San Francisco.  Cobb’s Comedy Club, of course, is just a few doors down from the historic Bimbo’s 365 Club, with its old school 1920s vibe.  We ended up parking around the corner, which meant up the hill, just under the famously curvy Lombard Street, a scenic atmosphere, indeed.

Morrissey @ Masonic (SF), IMG_20151229_205053LUMPENPROLETARIAT   Morrissey crushed it last night.  During the band’s performance of “Ganglord”, Morrissey played a montage of video clips evidencing the scourge of police terrorism in the USA, UK, and beyond.  As the song progressed, along with the montage of police mayhem, Morrissey interspersed clips of police and others beating and killing various animals.  The juxtaposition gives added depth and dimension to the humanitarian spirit of the song and performance.

As per usual, Morrissey opened his set with a video/film tribute to a plethora of musical and cultural gems projected on a large screen above the stage.  Photographed above, a Morrissey fan is photographed with a custom Morrissey jacket, in the audience, as we all watch Morrissey’s video collage, featuring, among many other things, the French/Armenian singer, songwriter, actor, public activist and diplomat Charles Aznavour.

It’s never a dull moment at a Morrissey concert.  Overjoyed, we cheered.  “Orale, Morrissey!” yo grité, to which Morrissey responded in a dignified Spanish accent, “Gracias.”

SF WEEKLY—[23 DEC 2015]  Good thing the Masonic doesn’t have a kitchen, because we all know how much our favorite vegan loves to hate on venues that serve meat. (In fact, Morrissey is so serious about not performing where burgers and dogs are sold that he has both cancelled shows and walked off stages altogether). When the 56-year-old is not busy promoting animal rights, penning open letters to Al Gore, or writing novels about cursed relay teams, he’s on the road, and San Francisco is lucky enough to be one of the cities he’s gracing with his presence. Concertgoers should be forewarned: You will see a lot of people wearing Smiths T-shirts, and you’ll be subjected to a lot of anti-slaughterhouse videos. Oh, and you’ll also see grown men crying. Grown men. Crying.
